It goes without saying that the Goldberg Variations can be labelled as baroque music. Even in a  transcription the music will sound ‘baroque’ and should be played on baroque instruments. With this in mind, three musicians, who having worked together for many years, joined forces to transcribe the work for string trio. Having experimented with its sound and playability we received the beneplacit of a harpsichord playing colleague and this transcription was duly completed. We hope that lovers of Bach and Golberg will enjoy it. The minimum number of slurs that are considered appropriate for stringed instruments has been added in dotted lines.

Selbstverständlich sind die „Goldberg-Variationen“ Barockmusik. Daher sollten sie, selbst wenn sie transkribiert werden, wie Barockmusik klingen und mit den alten Instrumenten gespielt werden. Vor diesem Hintergrund haben wir drei langjährige Kollegen uns zusammengetan, um das Werk für ein Streichtrio zu transkribieren: Mit dem Klang und der Spielbarkeit experimentierend, von einem Cembalokollegen für gut befunden, so ist diese neue Transkription entstanden. Wir hoffen, dass unsere Version des Werkes von vielen Liebhabern von Bach und der Goldberg-Variationen geschätzt werden. Die minimale Bindebögen, die zum Aufführen der Streichinstrumente als angemessen gelten, wurden mit gestrichelten Linien hinzugefügt.
