The composer Daniel Eberlin (1647-1713/15) was known for his fiery temper as well as his technical prowess on the violin. His cantata for Tenor, Violin, and Basso Continuo Ich will in aller Not corroborates contemporary accounts of his skill as a performer.

Throughout the cantata the violin vies for the spotlight: double stops and dazzling 32nd-note passages abound. Given the singularity of the cantata, it is unfortunate that so few of Eberlin’s compositions survive today. Ich will in aller Not is the work of a whimsical and eccentric composer, and it is no wonder that composers such as Mattheson and Telemann praised this “superb violinist”.
